Ripley is an interrogation about optimized legibility on-screen environment that develops the idea of transposing the legibility rules of a body text from print to the new media. Ripley is a mix of historical and contemporary shapes in this new serif design. Coming to life by Massara David over his diploma project from ECAL.

This Typeface is a tool-box that compiles a multitude of axes to give the opportunity to people to decide what’s the best for them. Ripley is currently proposing more than eight different axes to question the improvement of legibility on-screen: Weight, xHeight, Serif, Contrast, Spacing, Ascenders/Descenders, Slant and Blur. As a second step, the typeface is evolving itself by responding to the ambient light.

The new experiment proposing by Ripley is the combination of the multiples axes with the ambient light embed by the screen. In this way, instead of letting the reader to manipulate the variations, the font itself is programmed to respond to the light sources. It is also adapting to fatigue eyes throughout the day, increases its readability as the day goes and the ambient light changes. The more time you spend on-screen, the more comfortable the type becomes. Ripley becomes a living organism and evolves to provide the best legibility on-screen.

Increasingly forgotten over the generations, jazz has grown and evolved simultaneously with the social and political development of the United States, to the point of becoming its national music. From the first African slaves to the electrified sound of jazz fusion, through the melancholy of the Blues, the excitement of New Orleans, the roaring years, the young wolves of be-bop, the bermuda shorts and flower shirts of California to the rebellion of the 60s. This book portrays the origins of jazz, its relationship with America, as well as their consequence within his iconography.

“You Americans take jazz too lightly. You seem to see in it a music of little value, vulgar, ephemeral. But in my opinion, it’s her who will give birth to the national music of the United States.”
— Joseph Maurice Ravel, April 1928.

The Floating University Berlin is a temporary campus built on 2018 on a huge concrete pool for rainwater in Tempelhof. As an artificial island, the distances itself spatially and programmatically from the urban dynamics, thus allowing a different perspective on urban processes. It opens up a space that also invites those to think along, who suspect that they can not themselves influence urban development. The FUB is an international place of exchange on strategies of spatial production, but also a facility of learning from each other as well as a laboratory for urban experiments.

The main challenge was how to design something that the client can use it wihtout the help of the designer. The project will advence without for us the possiblity to work on it. As result we created a toolbox compiling many rules and catalogue for them to be able to work from inside. Based on the idea of a laboratory of creation, we decided to generated texture, images, forms inspiring by the science laboratory elements. Mixing the elements as zoom, gride, measurements, to give a very structured system and fluide at the same time.

The texts for each scandals are based on multiple articles from different journals, the point’s to show how with the same informations, the media from different country use it to reveal or hide the contain.
